Description
Position Overview
American Atheists is a national civil rights organization dedicated to protecting the separation of religion and government and ensuring that all people can participate fully, equally, and without fear. We protect the rights of atheists, advance social inclusion, and empower nonreligious people through advocacy, education, and community building. Our work is rooted in secular values that are bold in action, inclusive in practice, adaptive in approach, people-centered in focus, collaborative in spirit, authentic in voice, committed to freedom of conscience, and oriented toward a better future.
We are seeking a creative, strategic, and mission-driven digital communications professional to help grow our audience, deepen our engagement with supporters and members, and expand the reach of our advocacy efforts nationwide.
This is an exciting new position that will play a key role in advancing American Atheists’ online presence through smart visual design, compelling storytelling, strategic marketing campaigns, cross-platform content creation and other imaginative initiatives.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer, visual communicator, and digital creator who understands how to grow an audience and build meaningful engagement through social media, email marketing, and web content. They are energized by connecting people to ideas and building community online, and they are equally comfortable writing persuasive copy, designing engaging visual content, and analyzing campaign performance to drive organizational growth. They are committed to putting members, volunteers, and other key stakeholders first and ensuring that the organization is responding to the needs of the people we represent.
This position will collaborate across teams and help get American Atheists’ mission, vision, values, and work in front of new and existing supporters — turning ideas into stories, stories into support, and support into action. In collaboration with other staff members and key volunteers, this position will have the primary responsibility of developing and executing an integrated digital media strategy that grows membership, increases engagement, and amplifies nonreligious voices in the national conversation.

- Working closely with leadership and collaboratively across teams, produce compelling written and visual content, digital fundraising assets and messaging ( including email appeals, donational landing pages, and native ads) that translates organizational priorities into cohesive, audience-centered digital fundraising campaigns and messaging strategies.
- Design and manage a robust social media presence across multiple platforms, including developing and maintaining a consistent posting calendar, creating platform-native content formats (vertical video, stories, infographics, other short form video), and actively engage with followers to build community and drive advocacy participation.
- Use analytics, audience insights, A/B testing, and other data to refine messaging, improve engagement strategies, and strengthen long-term community building.
- Help manage website content, landing pages, and digital user journeys to ensure a clear, accessible, and compelling experience that reflects organizational storytelling and priorities.
- Ensure all digital content aligns with American Atheists’ style guide, brand identity, organizational voice and values, maintaining consistency across campaigns, platforms, and media formats.
- Monitor digital trends, platform changes, and emerging tools to identify opportunities for creative storytelling, audience growth, and improved engagement strategies.
- Assist with production of print assets, including copyediting and layout support, ensuring continuity between print and digital media.
- Maintain accurate membership records in the donor database and ensure all donations are promptly recorded.
