MetroCast

Company History

The Harron Family is among the pioneers in the Cable Television industry. The Harron companies were formed by Paul F. Harron, Sr. who started in the media business by selling advertising on vaudeville curtains and later progressed to owning and operating broadcast radio and television stations.

In 1964, as a defensive measure to protect their broadcast television property, Harron obtained the franchise to build and operate a Cable Television system in Utica, New York. Under the leadership of Paul F. Harron, Jr., who succeeded his father as President & CEO in 1977, Harron’s cable television strategy turned offensive and he expanded the Company, Harron Communications, to serve more than 300,000 subscribers through internal subscriber growth, construction of new cable franchises and acquisitions of other systems in the states of Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Texas and Vermont.

Harron Communications was sold in 1999 to Adelphia Communications but the Harron family still remained actively involved and deeply committed to the Cable Television industry over the years through their involvement in MetroCast. MetroCast was formed separately from Harron Communications in 1998 to acquire a cable television system in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire serving 30,000 subscribers. In September of 2005, the Harron Family partnered with Boston Ventures to form Harron Communications, LP which wholly owns the operating subsidiaries doing business as MetroCast Communications in the states of Alabama, Connecticut, Maryland, Mississippi, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Although the Harron family sustained the untimely death of Paul F. Harron, Jr. in 2005, its commitment to the Cable Television industry continues through his nieces and nephew (and grandchildren of the founder), Margaret Anne Bruder Nolen, Jennifer Bruder Lavin and James J. Bruder, Jr., its current Chairman and CEO, who continue the strategic and operating direction set by the late Paul F. Harron, Jr.

Harron Entertainment Company, LLC acts as the financial management services company responsible for the operations of Harron Communications, LP and its subsidiaries MetroCast Communications.
